Appreciative Inquiry
There was a time in my career when I used to measure success by focusing on results only, by measuring the three old faithfuls, quality, budget and timeline. I soon started to realise that this "success" felt quite empty and meaningless if it left the people impacted feeling disengaged and unimportant at the end. I embarked on a journey of seeking ways of delivering change that didn't "use up and wear out" the people involved. I discovered that when I honoured and focused on the people first, we were able to surpass all expectations in relation to quality, budgets and timelines. After a number of years I came across Appreciative Inquiry as a way of working and realised that it ticked all my boxes of being able to deliver outstanding results and outstanding people engagement and satisfaction at the same time.
Appreciative Inquiry is a strengths-based approach to work and to life. It is about seeking out and growing the positive core that exists in every person and every organisation. It is about studying what works as opposed to what fails. It seeks out and shines a light on the root causes of our successes as opposed to examining in detail the causes of our failures. It is not about ignoring our problems but it is about taking them and flipping them around into ideal outcomes very quickly.
Appreciative Inquiry can be applied to leadership, coaching, strategy development and change management. It is an inclusive process that is designed to bring out the best in the people and the organisation it is being applied to.
I have use Appreciative Inquiry extensively in my work for the past 8 years. For example, I have used it to help a charity engage all of their staff and stakeholders to design their 3 year strategy; I have used it to help a small, vibrant company design what outstanding performance looks like for them and put the systems in place to allow them deliver it consistently and I have trained staff in companies to be able to use Appreciative Inquiry to deliver positive change in-house themselves.
I believe the more people using Appreciative Inquiry, the better the world will be. My ideal interaction with a client is one where I not only partner with them to introduce transformative change in their organisation using Appreciative Inquiry, but I also leave them feeling competent and confident to use Appreciative Inquiry themselves in the future wherever they see the opportunity or need arising.
